- Perks of being a wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
If you have never read a book (except textbooks, of course!) and looking for the simplest English book with a great plot, this one is for you. The book is written from a point of view of a 15 YO boy, so naturally, the simplest language and vocab is used. Storytelling is magical, and even though it’s a teen-age drama, there’s just a tiny amount of drama in it! The book was later adapted into a movie, starring Logan Lerman and Emma Watson. Go for it if you are thinking of buying your first ever book.
2. Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling
Does this even need an introduction? Well, it’s a series of fantasy books. It has 7 books which made records as the fastest-selling books. Book 1, Chapter 1, line 1 will take you to another world and you’ll wish to stay there forever. The author had targeted young readers but it’s been loved and appreciated by all age groups.
The film-series based on the book-series is distributed by Warner Bros, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
Being a diehard fan of the HP series, I would definitely want you to read these.
3. We Should All Be Feminist by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This book is an essay adapted from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TEDx Talk with the same name. It’s very small in size but that doesn’t make it a light read. It has a lot of wisdom. This book will surely give you food for thought. I seriously feel it should be a mandatory read to everyone.
4. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
We all have dreams and desires; this book will keep you pondering over the choices you have made. If words like dreams, achievements, and destiny, etc attract you more than the words like responsibilities, routine, and duty, you will love this book. This is one of the most popular books in the self-help genre.
Paulo Coelho is known for his spiritually motivated characters; and this book is known as his best work till now.
5. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
If only we could predict life! This book is Khaled Hosseini’s first published book. It is beautifully written and the characters and places are painted so naturally that you will be convinced that everything is happening for real. This is a powerful story of friendship and the effects of lies, which will stay with you for a long time.
I just don’t want to stop here. If you enjoy reading this, grab ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ by the same author.
6. Jaya / Sita by Devdutt Pattanaik
‘Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata’ is an abridged version of the original Mahabharata. It is written in the simplest format possible and tries to cover all the aspects of the epic tale. The story itself is compelling and Devdutt Pattanaik’s story-telling skills will build the curiosity to know all the details and understand the characters deeply. I would recommend it to both – noobs and nerds of Mahabharata.
If you are interested in Mahabharata, I’m sure you are equally interested in Ramayana. ‘Sita: An Illustrated Retelling of Ramayana’ is another gem by Devdutt Pattanaik.
7. The subtle art of not giving a f*ck by Mark Manson
I found this book personally relevant because all these years I have been thinking a lot about unnecessary things, which do not even need any of my attention. Throughout the book, Mark seems like that close friend (not so polite one!) who keeps reminding you of your worth and is a constant motivator to you. Most of the books or people will tell you what to do, but Mark also tells you what not to do. The book is entertaining; very funny. But you can imagine the language used in it by its title, so, I really don’t want it to go in the hands of school goers.
So this is my list of top 7 recommended books for beginners to jump-start reading. Do read all of these and let me know how you like it. Feel free to recommend any books in the comment section below.
