Apple Wants Prepear to Stop Using Pear in its Logo
The trillion-dollar software giant says Prepear’s pear logo is too close to their apple logo and allegedly hurts their brand
Apple has opposed the trademark application for a small business, Prepear, demanding that they change their pear-shaped logo, used to represent their brand in the recipe management and meal planning business.
The founders of the company launched a petition on Change.org this weekend requesting to save the “Pear” from the “Apple”. “We are a very small business with only 5 team members, and legal costs from our fight for the right of all small business owners to be able to develop their own logo without fear of frivolous litigation has already cost us many thousands of dollars and the very saddening layoff of one of our team members.”, claims the founders of the Prepear.
Prepear has accused Apple of abusing their position of power by going after small businesses like theirs who are already struggling due to the effects of Covid-19. It further points out that Apple has “done this to dozens of small businesses” and that many have chosen to abandon their logo, or close doors. “While to rest of the world is going out of their way to help small businesses during this pandemic, Apple had chosen to go after our small business”, the Prepear founder say.
“It is a very terrifying experience to be legally attacked by one of the largest companies in the world, even when we have clearly done nothing wrong, and we understand why most companies just give in and change their logos. We feel a moral obligation to take a stand against Apple's aggressive legal action against small businesses and fight for the right to keep our logo. We are defending ourselves against Apple not only to keep our logo, but to send a message to big tech companies that bullying small businesses has consequences.”
So far, the petition launched by Prepear has already garnered 35,000 signatures and this number is increasing rapidly. You can find the Apple's Notice of Opposition v.
