Should the exams be cancelled?
It’s very easy to say for the political parties that ‘students will not be harmed’, but they have no idea yet how much damage we are actually going to do by demanding cancellation of the exams.
The coronavirus outbreak has triggered unprecedented mass layoffs with many companies announcing downsizing of their workforces. This situation is not expected to be any different in the next year or so. Amidst such circumstances, if the new graduates get their degree without passing the exam, then who will hire them in this situation? Although the decision to cancel the 9th, 11th, and 2nd year examinations has created a very happy atmosphere among the students, it is foolish to demand cancellation of the final degree examination and to announce such a decision if it is not accepted by the related authorities. What is the future of these children who are carrying their degree certificates without even checking their qualifications? Who will ask for this degree and why should they? Are the political parties who are demanding cancellation of the examination going to give them jobs or attend interviews on behalf of these students? Many countries all over the globe including China are returning to the normalcy and focusing on resuming the schools and trying not to hamper education under any circumstances as that’s what is going to define the future of the countries. If they can resume schools for kids, can't we at least conduct exams for the last year students so that no one can point a finger at their degrees? .
It’s very easy to say for the political parties that ‘students will not be harmed’, but they have no idea yet how much damage we are actually going to do by demanding cancellation of the exams. Do we really need an opinion of the political leaders to take decisions about the university matters and education? No. It’s entirely up to the universities and the governor who is the principal chancellor of the universities. This desire of the political leaders to interfere in the decision-making process of our education system when they do not have the authority to do so is undermining the very purpose of education. Such interference should not be tolerated by the universities as the interest of the children who are dreaming of getting good jobs upon finishing their studies is of an utmost importance. No one is going to value their degree papers without conducting and passing the exam.
It’s time for students to understand this upcoming challenge if they get degree certificates without giving exams. It would be reasonable to expect that the time has not come yet for the political parties to play a role in the decision making of our education system.
